  1. UNRWA

Created in December 1949, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a relief and human development agency which supports more than 5 million registered Palestinian refugees, and their patrilineal descendants, who fled or were expelled from their homes during the 1948 Palestine war as well as those who fled or were expelled during and following the 1967 Six Day war. Originally intended to provide jobs on public works projects and direct relief, today UNRWA provides education, health care, and social services to the population it supports. Aid is provided in five areas of operation: Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem; aid for Palestinian refugees outside these five areas is provided by UNHCR.It also provided relief to Jewish and Arab Palestine refugees inside the state of Israel following the 1948 conflict until the Israeli government took over responsibility for Jewish refugees in 1952. In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the UN General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2020. Jared Kushner, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States and the U.S. broker for peace talks, has advocated a "sincere effort to disrupt" UNRWA as part of the Trump administration's proposals for the Middle East, since according to Kushner it "perpetuates a status quo, is corrupt, inefficient and doesn’t help peace".UNRWA is the only UN agency dedicated to helping refugees from a specific region or conflict and is separate from UNHCR. Formed in 1950, UNHCR is the main UN refugee agency, which is responsible for aiding other refugees all over the world. Unlike UNRWA, UNHCR has a specific mandate to aid its refugees to eliminate their refugee status by local integration in current country, resettlement in a third country or repatriation when possible. UNRWA allows refugee status to be inherited by some descendants.

Examples of UNRWA in a Sentence

  1. Danny Danon:

Just over the last year alone, UNRWA officials were elected to the leadership of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, UNRWA schools denied the existence of Israel, and terror tunnels were dug under UNRWA facilities, it is time for this absurdity to end and for humanitarian funds to be directed towards their intended purpose -- the welfare of refugees.

  2. Abu Anas:

Most people just sit at home ... we're stuck here and stuck in the camp, there's very little water, and little fuel. We chiefly rely on aid from UNRWA. It's not much but it's our best hope - every 20 days we get a parcel which is just about enough for a family.

  3. Heather Nauert:

Beyond the budget gap itself and failure to mobilize adequate and appropriate burden sharing, the fundamental business model and fiscal practices that have marked UNRWA for years – tied to UNRWA’s endlessly and exponentially expanding community of entitled beneficiaries – is simply unsustainable and has been in crisis mode for many years.

  4. Benjamin Netanyahu:

UNRWA is an organization that perpetuates the problem of the Palestinian refugees, it also perpetuates the narrative of the so-called ‘ right of return ’ with the aim of eliminating the State of Israel, and therefore UNRWA must disappear.

  5. Ambassador Danon:

Peter Anthony Gallo, an international lawyer and former investigator for the UNs own watchdog, the OIOS, told Fox News that Peter Anthony Gallo was not surprised by the allegations. [ They ] do not surprise me in the slightest ; there is nothing unusual in them and they could just as easily have come from any one of a number of Organizations in the UN system because they reflect the management culture of disregard for the staff, disregard for the rules and a general air of entitlement and impunity, he said. Gallo who himself was a whistleblower at the U.N. and now director of, Hear their Cries, a group that reports on sexual abuse and exploitation around the world and at the UN. The problem is that U.N. agencies control their own investigative functions and deal with disciplinary matters internally. The result is that instead of being a means of addressing misconduct and wrongdoing, the internal justice system is more of a tool for intimidating any staff members who dare to report misconduct by senior staff, such as by Krahenbuhl and his cronies. Following reports that both Switzerland and the Netherlands suspended their funding to UNRWA, Israels United Nations Ambassador Danny Danon called upon all of the international to suspend funding. The report reveals alarming, but not surprising, findings. In addition to propagating false information about its refugee population, UNRWA has in recent years worked to redirect world funds to continue this corruption industry that has served its leadership. The international community, which generously finances UNRWA, must immediately suspend the budgets assigned to the agency. Ambassador Danon said.
