    Thomas Gray (1716-1771) was an English poet, letter-writer, and professor at the University of Cambridge. He is most recognized for his "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" and for the phrase "ignorance is bliss". Though he wrote limited number of poems, he is considered one of the most important English poets of the 18th century. Gray mixed tradition with experimentation, thus bridging the gap between the Augustan period and the Romantic period in English literature.
