Wikipedia

  1. sunni

Sunni Islam () is the largest branch of Islam, followed by 85–90% of the world's Muslims. Its name comes from the word Sunnah, referring to the tradition of Muhammad. The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims arose from a disagreement over the succession to Muhammad and subsequently acquired broader political significance, as well as theological and juridical dimensions. According to Sunni traditions, Muhammad left no successor and the participants of the Saqifah event appointed Abu Bakr as the next-in-line (the first caliph). This contrasts with the Shia view, which holds that Muhammad appointed his son-in-law and cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor. The adherents of Sunni Islam are referred to in Arabic as ahl as-sunnah wa l-jamāʻah ("the people of the Sunnah and the community") or ahl as-Sunnah for short. In English, its doctrines and practices are sometimes called Sunnism, while adherents are known as Sunni Muslims, Sunnis, Sunnites and Ahlus Sunnah. Sunni Islam is sometimes referred to as "orthodox Islam", though some scholars view this translation as inappropriate. The Quran, together with hadith (especially those collected in Kutub al-Sittah) and binding juristic consensus, form the basis of all traditional jurisprudence within Sunni Islam. Sharia rulings are derived from these basic sources, in conjunction with analogical reasoning, consideration of public welfare and juristic discretion, using the principles of jurisprudence developed by the traditional legal schools. In matters of creed, the Sunni tradition upholds the six pillars of imān (faith) and comprises the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools of Kalam (theology) as well as the textualist school known as traditionalist theology.

  1. sunni

Sunni refers to the largest branch of Islam, representing approximately 85-90% of the global Muslim population. The word "Sunni" comes from the term "Ahl al-Sunna", which means "people of the tradition", referring to the traditional practices and teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The adherents of Sunni Islam interpret the laws and teachings of the religion based on consensus and community practices through time, as opposed to strictly adhering to religious texts. This allows for variations in practices among Sunni Muslims across different geographical regions. It is contrasted with Shia Islam, the second major branch of Islam.

We need the U.S. government to continue to lend its political and logistical support to the legitimate government and the Arab coalition, this will, in turn, help reinstating the government institutions, which will curb AQAP operations and lead to its demise. The conflict, according to the U.N., has claimed the lives of more than 10,000 people, displaced millions and gutted the infrastructure of the country, already considered the poorest in the Middle East before the war began. Over the past few months, Yemen has been devastated not only by bombs and bullets, but has experienced a severe return of the once almost extinct – and under normal circumstances highly treatable – cholera. American involvement in the fight is increasing. Although the U.S. was forced to shutter Yemen Embassy in Washington D.C. in Yemen in 2015 and pull out special operations forces pursuing AQAP operatives as the conflict spiraled, the American military isincreasinglyembroiled in the embattled nation. U.S. troops have returned in small numbers, and the Trump administration has vastly accelerated the number of operations in the region in recent months. America’s engagement inside Yemen and its backing of The Saudi-led coalition, which supports Mubarak and the rest of the internationally-recognized government, is steeped in controversy. Government forces, Houthi rebels and Al-Qaeda factions control different parts of war-torn Yemen Much of the international media and human rights bodies have accused the U.S. of propping up a bloody Saudi-initiated war, a criticism Mubarak sharply denies. Some of the criticism may reflect a misunderstanding of the history and nature of the conflict. While many have framed the war as a Sunni-Shia sectarian conflict, Mubarak insists the two groups of Muslims, Shia and Sunni, have co-existed in Yemen for a very long time. They have, to a degree, been both part of Iraq's salvation but also the most serious threat to the all-important effort of once again getting the Sunni Arab population in Iraq to feel that it has a stake in the success of Iraq rather than a stake in its failure, longer term, Iranian-backed Shia militia could emerge as the preeminent power in the country, one that is outside the control of the government and instead answerable to Tehran.

  3. Jay Garner:

If you ally with the Syrian Rebels, you’re taking on the Russians and the Kurds; if you ally yourself with Assad, you’re in a Shia alliance and 85 percent of the Middle East is Sunni, if Russia eliminates ISIS, they eliminate the Syrian rebels and the Syrian rebels should be our allies -- we need to protect them, and we need to continue to protect the Kurds.

We have an interest in expanding the cooperation in the Sunni axis, which is struggling against the radical axis headed by Iran, the more the Saudis, and the Gulf states in general, connect to the countries with which we are at peace and create with them a strategic front against ISIS, Iran, Hezbollah, against all the players that are our actual enemies, ultimately the effect will be unifying and not weakening.
