    St. James the Apostle, also known as James the Great, Saint James of Compostela, or James, son of Zebedee, is one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. According to the New Testament, he was a son of Zebedee and Salome, and brother of John the Apostle. He is considered the first apostle to be martyred. St. James is often identified as Santiago, the patron saint of Spain, and his feast day is celebrated on July 25th. It is believed that his remains are enshrined at the Santiago de Compostela cathedral in Galicia, Spain. In iconography, St. James is often depicted as a pilgrim with a pilgrim hat, staff, and a scallop shell.
