    Sir William Gilbert (1544–1603) was an English physician, physicist and natural philosopher. He is known for his pioneering research into magnetism, and is often credited as one of the originators of the term "electricity". He published an influential book on magnetism, known as "De Magnete", which contains many of his important scientific findings. In addition to his scientific endeavors, Gilbert also served as physician to Queen Elizabeth I.
