    Sir John Hawkins (also spelled as Hawkyns) was a notable English naval commander, merchant, navigator, shipbuilder, and slave trader during the 16th century. He was born in 1532 and died in 1595. He is most recognised for his role in early British slave trading and his efforts in building up the Elizabethan navy. He was a cousin of Sir Francis Drake and a key figure in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
