    Silybum is a genus of flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteraceae, that are commonly known as thistles. The species in this genus are native to the Mediterranean region and have been introduced to many other parts of the world. The most well-known member of this genus is Silybum marianum, also known as milk thistle, which is often used as an herbal remedy for liver problems. The plant contains silymarin, a group of compounds said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
