    Shelby Silverstein, more commonly known as Shel Silverstein, was an American writer, poet, cartoonist, songwriter, and playwright, best known for his children's books such as 'Where the Sidewalk Ends', 'A Light in the Attic', and 'The Giving Tree'. He was born on September 25, 1930, and passed away in May of 1999. His works are a mix of whimsy, melancholy, and thought-provoking elements and have been translated into more than 30 languages. He also wrote songs, including hits like "A Boy Named Sue," made famous by Johnny Cash.
