  1. spank

In pioneer days there was a certain bonding between man and his horse(s). Either a team of horses used in the field, or a horse and buggy for family travel.

A team of horses fresh from the field, standing in the stall waiting for dinner (a bucket of oats). The farmer slaps (spanks) the horse on the flank and the horse shifts over so the farmer can put oats (feed) in the bin for the horse. Or, the family buggy or the horse and buggy used by the doctor to make his rounds. When riding in a buggy, the reins rested on the horses flank. If the horse was walking and the horseman wanted a faster gate, say a trot, he simply raised the reins off the flank and let them drop (a spank) and the horse shifted to a trot.
