  1. Dufoow

Dufoow is a somali word meaning in english a changed man. A man should be persistent in behaviour. If they fail to have that personality, they are seen as the black sheep as they are not as every other men in the society for example law abiding gentlemen. Such men, for example are thieves, liars, killers, robbers, those who enslave, those who despise, rapist, all of these people are the worst. He is a person who has achieved a bad reputation and is convinced that his bad personality will make him proud. This kind of person is seen as a "mid dufoobey" in the Somali language which means in english "one bad".

Somalia have a culture of respect and generosity. There are bad words in the Somali language that people can use for those that are bad. But they like to be metaphorical and somalis traditionally believe that it is good for the bad person if they hide one or two words in a metaphor. Such words are "dufoow" that can be used for bad a person or people with bad character. Dufoow is not a word that will make someone fight you unless you are brave enough to say it infront of the person you're refering to, instead it will make them think "what have I done?", "why are someone telling me to ‐dufoow?" and therefore it's metaphor and not a word of abuse. The word is used in two ways: dufoow ‐tell someone to "dufoow" ( in the present) which means in english ‐be bad or be worse. And dufoobey ‐ is used to tell someone that has been ‐a bad or worse person " waa mid dufoobey" meaning he's one unpleasant man, ( it's used in the past). When someone tells you "dufoow", he's telling you to change, while the words meaning is bad or become worse, but when it's seen as a metaphor it means "change" and it's a very hard way to say to someone "change". They way and the tone of voice that is used when saying this word is very harsh and intense but the definition is the same as change. When someone is called "dufoow", they should see it as if they did something wrong that they couldn't see and must immediately change their unpleasant behaviour. Someone saying Dufoow is as if they told you "go and change behaviour". Dufoow in the English language is change even if there is other ways of saying change in the Somali language , this is the closest word in the english language we can find.

Etymology: The word Dufoow comes from "xun" meaning bad and when something is bad "wuu xumaadey". "Wuu xumaadey" has become Dufoobey and "xun" has become Dufoow. It has developed, and the words people use are often dependent upon the size of each person's language repository. The term are not to be used for women as in somali culture men and women don't exchange words and other things. Historically in Somalia men and women were believed not to be close. Therefore, what are used to refer to men were not used for women. And what was used for women were not used for men. This kind of culture comes from the fact that women and men are not mixed. In Somalia women and men do not talk to each other, do not look at each other, do not sit together. The opposite word used for women is Siilaanyo. It has the same definition, the only difference is that one is used for men and one is used for women.
