Dieppe
Dieppe is a Canadian city in Westmorland County, New Brunswick. It is New Brunswick's fourth-most-populous city with a history and identity that goes back to the eighteenth century. It was first incorporated as a town in 1952 and designated as a city in 2003. Its namesake comes from a commune in the Seine-Maritime department, a port on the English Channel, in France and was adopted by the citizens of the area to commemorate the Second World War's Operation Jubilee, the Dieppe Raid of 1942. The City of Dieppe is officially a francophone city, although about three-quarters of the city's population speaks both English and French. Linguistically it is predominantly French-speaking of mostly Acadian French roots with a regional accent in which is unique to southeast New Brunswick. Regardless of language, however, a large majority of Dieppe’s population were in favour of the by-law regulating the use of external commercial signs in both official languages, which is a first for the province of New Brunswick. Dieppe is the largest majority-francophone city in Canada outside Québec. It was one of the co-host communities of the first Congrès Mondial Acadien which was held in Moncton in 1994.
