A leader in the socialist Sandinista National Liberation Front, his policies in government have seen the implementation of leftist reforms across Nicaragua. Ortega held suppressed election, winning and serving from 1985 to 1990. A Marxist-Leninist, and guided by the Castro regime, his first period in office was characterized by a controversial program of forced removal, nationalization, land reform, wealth redistribution and literacy programs. U.S.'s governing Reagan administration, funded the opposing rebel groups the Contras.
