  2. cenobitenoun

A monk who lives in a religious community, rather than in solitude

  3. Etymology: From cenobite or ecclesiastical coenobita, from coenobium, from κοινόβιον, from κοινός + βίος.

  1. cenobite

Cenobitic (or coenobitic) monasticism is a monastic tradition that stresses community life. Often in the West the community belongs to a religious order, and the life of the cenobitic monk is regulated by a religious rule, a collection of precepts. The older style of monasticism, to live as a hermit, is called eremitic. A third form of monasticism, found primarily in Eastern Christianity, is the skete. The English words "cenobite" and "cenobitic" are derived, via Latin, from the Greek words koinos (κοινός), "common", and bios (βίος), "life". The adjective can also be cenobiac (κοινοβιακός, koinobiakos) or cœnobitic (obsolete). A group of monks living in community is often referred to as a cenobium. Cenobitic monasticism appears in several religious traditions, though most commonly in Buddhism and Christianity.

Webster Dictionary

  1. Cenobitenoun

one of a religious order, dwelling in a convent, or a community, in opposition to an anchoret, or hermit, who lives in solitude

  2. Etymology: [L. coenobita, fr. Gr. koino`bios; koino`s common + bi`os life: cf. F. cnobite.]

  1. Cenobite

The Cenobites are extradimensional beings who appear in the works of Clive Barker, including the novella The Hellbound Heart and the nine Hellraiser films. They are also mentioned, in passing, in the novel Weaveworld, in which they are referred to as “The Surgeons.” The Cenobites vary in number, appearance, and motivations depending on the medium in which they appear. The involvement of multiple parties in the production of Hellraiser films and comics has led to varying levels of consistency regarding the canonical aspects of their philosophies and abilities. The only constants are that they take the form of ritually mutilated creatures with varying degrees of human characteristics, and that they can only reach Earth's reality through a schism in time and space, which is opened and closed using an innocuous-looking puzzle box called the Lament Configuration.
