Freebase

  1. Banner

A banner is a flag or other piece of cloth bearing a symbol, logo, slogan or other message. Banner-making is an ancient craft. Church banners commonly portray the saint to whom the church is dedicated. The word derives from french word "bannière" and late Latin bandum, a cloth out of which a flag is made. The German language developed the word to mean an official edict or proclamation and since such written orders often prohibited some form of human activity, bandum assumed the meaning of a ban, control, interdict or excommunication. Banns has the same origin meaning an official proclamation, and abandon means to change loyalty or disobey orders, semantically "to leave the cloth or flag".

Chambers 20th Century Dictionary

  1. Banner

ban′ėr, n. a military standard: a flag or ensign bearing some device, as in processions, &c.—adj. Ban′nered, furnished with banners. [O. Fr. banere—Low L. bandum, bannum; cog. with Band and Bind.]

The New Hacker's Dictionary

  1. banner

    1. A top-centered graphic on a web page. Esp. used in banner ad. 2. On interactive software, a first screen containing a logo and/or author credits and/or a copyright notice. Similar to splash screen. 3. The title page added to printouts by most print spoolers (see spool). Typically includes user or account ID information in very large character-graphics capitals. Also called a burst page, because it indicates where to burst (tear apart) fanfold paper to separate one user's printout from the next. 4. A similar printout generated (typically on multiple pages of fan-fold paper) from user-specified text, e.g., by a program such as Unix's banner({1,6)}.
