    The leaves are rough, hairy, pennated, and grow alternately on the branches; the flower-cup consists of one leaf, which is divided into five segments; the flowers have five or six leaves, and are formed into a long spike, which expand in form of a rose; the fruit is oblong, dry, and prickly, like the burdock; in each of which are contained two kernels. The species are:
    1. The common or medicinal agrimony.
    2. The sweet-smelling agrimony.
    3. Lesser agrimony, with a white flower. The first is common in the hedges, in many parts, and is the sort commonly used in medicine. It will grow in almost any soil or situation; and is increased by parting the roots in autumn, or by sowing the seeds soon after they are ripe. Mill.
