Volkhov is a river in Novgorodsky and Chudovsky Districts of Novgorod Oblast and Kirishsky and Volkhovsky Districts of Leningrad Oblast in northwestern Russia. It connects Lake Ilmen and Lake Ladoga and belongs to the basin of the Neva River. The length of the river is 224 kilometres, and the area of its drainage basin is 80,200 square kilometres. The cities and towns of Veliky Novgorod, Chudovo, Kirishi, Volkhov, and Novaya Ladoga, as well as the selo of Staraya Ladoga, a historically important site, are located on the banks of the Volkhov. The etymology of the name is unclear.
