Within many Masonic lodges, one of the important officers holds the title of Tyler and his purpose is to guard the door to their secret meetings. He is placed outside the door of the lodgeroom, allowing none to pass save those duly qualified. There is also another guard placed inside the door and he is usually called the the Ineer Guard. The word Tyler is old English for "doorkeeper".
