  1. tropospherenoun

the lowest atmospheric layer; from 4 to 11 miles high (depending on latitude)

Wiktionary

  1. tropospherenoun

The lower levels of the atmosphere extending from the earth's surface up to the tropopause. It is characterized by convective air movements and a large vertical temperature change.

  2. Etymology: From troposphère.

Wikipedia

  1. Troposphere

The troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere of the Earth, and contains 75% of the total mass of the planetary atmosphere, 99% of the total mass of water vapour and aerosols, and is where most weather phenomena occur. From the planetary surface of the Earth, the average height of the troposphere is 18 km (11 mi; 59,000 ft) in the tropics; 17 km (11 mi; 56,000 ft) in the middle latitudes; and 6 km (3.7 mi; 20,000 ft) in the high latitudes of the polar regions in winter; thus the average height of the troposphere is 13 km (8.1 mi; 43,000 ft). The term troposphere derives from the Greek words tropos (rotating) and sphaira (sphere) indicating that rotational turbulence mixes the layers of air and so determines the structure and the phenomena of the troposphere. The rotational friction of the troposphere against the planetary surface affects the flow of the air, and so forms the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that varies in height from hundreds of meters up to 2 km (1.2 mi; 6,600 ft). The measures of the PBL vary according to the latitude, the landform, and the time of day when the meteorological measurement is realized. Atop the troposphere is the tropopause, which is the functional atmospheric border that demarcates the troposphere from the stratosphere. As such, because the tropopause is an inversion layer in which air-temperature increases with altitude, the temperature of the troposphere remains constant. The layer has the largest concentration of nitrogen.

  1. troposphere

The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, where all weather conditions occur. It starts at the Earth's surface and extends up to about 5 to 9 miles (8 to 15 kilometers) high. This layer is filled with various gases and is most dense at the bottom, becoming less dense with altitude. Temperature and pressure decrease as you go higher up in the troposphere. Nearly all air pollution and lifeforms on Earth exist within this atmospheric layer.

  1. Troposphere

The troposphere is the lowest portion of Earth's atmosphere. It contains approximately 80% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of its water vapour and aerosols. The average depth of the troposphere is approximately 17 km in the middle latitudes. It is deeper in the tropics, up to 20 km, and shallower near the polar regions, at 7 km in summer, and indistinct in winter. The lowest part of the troposphere, where friction with the Earth's surface influences air flow, is the planetary boundary layer. This layer is typically a few hundred metres to 2 km deep depending on the landform and time of day. The border between the troposphere and stratosphere, called the tropopause, is a temperature inversion. The word troposphere derives from the Greek: tropos for "change" reflecting the fact that turbulent mixing plays an important role in the troposphere's structure and behaviour. Most of the phenomena we associate with day-to-day weather occur in the troposphere.

Examples of troposphere in a Sentence

  1. Jason Furtado:

In the stratosphere, the polar vortex typically recovers in strength within a couple of weeks of the peak of the event, however, in the troposphere, the effects of the SSW event( e.g., a further south jet stream, cold and stormy weather) can last for up to 8 weeks. So, these events, which can evolve quickly, can have lasting impacts on the winter weather patterns in the troposphere.

  2. Adam Scaife:

When the stratosphere really puts its foot down, the troposphere responds....
