Wikipedia

  1. Therm

The therm (symbol, thm) is a non-SI unit of heat energy equal to 100,000 British thermal units (BTU), and approximately 105 megajoules, 29 kilowatt-hours, 25200 kilocalories and 25.2 thermies. One therm is the energy content of approximately 100 cubic feet (2.83 cubic metres) of natural gas at standard temperature and pressure. However, the BTU is not standardised worldwide, with slightly different values in the EU, UK, and USA, meaning that the energy content of the therm also varies by territory. Natural gas meters measure volume and not energy content, and given that the energy density varies with the mix of hydrocarbons in the natural gas, a 'therm factor' is used by natural gas companies to convert the volume of gas used to its heat equivalent, usually being expressed in units of 'therms per CCF' (CCF is an abbreviation for 100 cubic feet). Higher than average concentration of ethane, propane or butane will increase the therm factor and the inclusion of non-flammable impurities, such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen will reduce it. The Wobbe Index of a fuel gas is also sometimes used to quantify the amount of heat per unit volume burnt.

  1. therm

A therm is a unit of heat energy. It is equivalent to 100,000 British thermal units (BTU). It is primarily used in the natural gas industry for billing and is approximately equal to 105.5 megajoules or 29.3 kilowatt hours.

Wikidata

  1. Therm

Natural Gas is usually measured by volume in the United States and is stated in cubic feet. A cubic foot of gas is the amount of gas needed to fill a volume of one cubic foot under set conditions of pressure and temperature. To measure larger amounts of natural gas, a "therm" is used to denote 100 cubic feet, and "mcf" is used to denote 1,000 cubic feet. To provide greater accuracy in comparing fuels, energy content is measured in terms of "British Thermal Units." A BTU is the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water, one degree Fahrenheit at or close to its point of maximum density. One British therm is a non-SI unit of heat energy equal to 100,000 British thermal units. It is approximately the energy equivalent of burning 100 cubic feet of natural gas. Since meters measure volume and not energy content, a therm factor is used by gas companies to convert the volume of gas used to its heat equivalent, and thus calculate the actual energy use. The therm factor is usually in the units therms/CCF. It will vary with the mix of hydrocarbons in the natural gas. Natural gas with a higher than average concentration of ethane, propane or butane will have a higher therm factor. Impurities, such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen, lower the therm factor.³

The Standard Electrical Dictionary

  1. Therm

A unit of heat. It has been proposed by the British Association and amounts to a redefinition of the smaller calorie. It is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree centigrade, starting at the temperature of maximum density of water.

  3. Trevor Sikorski:

Ukraine wants to have 19 bcm in storage by the end of the summer but it doesn't have the money to buy that gas. The probable outcome is it will have around 14 bcm. They could probably get through most winters with that amount but if it is cold they will struggle and look for gas from western Europe, we forecast the seasonal ramp in prices could go as high as 53 pence/therm (peak winter weather prices).
