Wikidata

  1. Susto

Susto is a cultural illness, specifically a "fright sickness" with strong psychological overtones. This illness is caused when the soul is believed to be displaced after a traumatic emotional or physical event. The time between the event that occurred and the soul displacement can be anywhere from days to years. A more severe and potentially fatal form of susto is called espanto. When the illness is this severe, it is characterized by lethargy, lack of motivation, insomnia and diarrhea. Treatments used are spiritual in nature and include ritual cleansing and herbal teas. Among the indigenous peoples of Latin America, in which this illness is most common, susto may be conceptualized as a case of spirit attack. Symptoms of susto are thought to include nervousness, anorexia, insomnia, listlessness, despondency, involuntary muscle tics, and diarrhea. Arthur Rubel, an anthropologist, stated in a recent study held in October 2010 that there have been a number of cases of Susto throughout the years. He also notes that the DSM relates it to a "culture-bound illness", although it occurs in multiple cultures. Culturally stressed adults are most likely to suffer from Susto; however, children may also be afflicted. The onset of the disease generally follows a sudden frightening experience such as an accident, a fall, witnessing a relative's sudden death, or any other potentially traumatic event. Research shows that knowledge of the existence of Susto greatly contributes to improvement of the condition. Susto is a culture bound syndrome found in Central America related to stress or an emotional event, which results in "Soul Loss"
