Etymology: subduple, Fr. sub and duplus, Latin.
As one of these under pulleys doth abate half of that heaviness which the weight hath in itself, and cause the power to be in a subduple proportion unto it, so two of them do abate half of that which remains, and cause a subquadruple proportion, and three a subsextuple. John Wilkins, Math. Mag.
