Wikidata

  1. Strapping

Strapping refers to the use of a strap as an implement of corporal punishment. It is typically a broad and heavy strip of leather, often with a hard handle, the more flexible 'blade' being applied to the offender. Probably because of the stiffness, the word "strap" is sometimes used interchangeably with a leather paddle. Other terms that are sometimes used interchangeably include whipping, lashing, and confusingly even in some official language, belting -- in principle a belt is lighter, without a handle. These terms are strictly speaking reserved for other implements. The Scottish tawse is a forked version with two or more tails, colloquially known as the belt, and was the standard implement of punishment in state schools until it was banned in 1987. ⁕The historical strop, usually made for institutional use, is also known as a prison strap because it was mainly used on adult convicts – either for discipline within the prison system, or as an original judicial corporal punishment, often combined with prison time, imposed by a court but carried out by prison staff. This has been the case notably in the USA and Canada.

Examples of strapping in a Sentence

  1. Lesley Manville:

… You’re seeing real pockets of tenderness with how [the characters] are dealing with getting older and approaching that time of their lives, i always see Cathy and Michael at the center of it all, having this 'will they, won’t they.' Will this romance happen? Is it alright to be falling in love at this time in your life with your dead husband’s best friend? It’s very tenderly and delicately written, and I think people want to see a romance that is about two middle-aged people, rather than a romance with strapping young 20-somethings.

  2. Simon Howie Butchers:

You can give your kids a meal that is not full of things you do n’t want to feed them – for a few pounds you can feed three strapping lads, from a kitchen perspective, it is very simple because when it leaves our factory it is already cooked. So when you or a restaurant owner gets it into the kitchen all you have to do is heat it up to be piping hot. It could n’t be more basic : a student with no cooking skills or a Michelin-starred chef do exactly the same thing to put it out on the plate.
