A device that measures the strain in a structural element by measuring changes in electrical resistance of a sensor attached to the element under investigation.
Wikipedia
Strain gauge
A strain gauge (also spelled strain gage) is a device used to measure strain on an object. Invented by Edward E. Simmons and Arthur C. Ruge in 1938, the most common type of strain gauge consists of an insulating flexible backing which supports a metallic foil pattern. The gauge is attached to the object by a suitable adhesive, such as cyanoacrylate. As the object is deformed, the foil is deformed, causing its electrical resistance to change. This resistance change, usually measured using a Wheatstone bridge, is related to the strain by the quantity known as the gauge factor.
ChatGPT
strain gauge
A strain gauge is a device used to measure the amount of strain or deformation of an object when force or stress is applied on it. It works by converting this mechanical motion into an electrical signal, which can be measured and analyzed. Strain gauges are often used in physical testing, mechanical engineering, and in devices such as load cells, pressure sensors, and torque sensors.
