sound barrier
The sound barrier is a term used to refer to the physical phenomenon that occurs when an object, such as an aircraft, reaches the speed of sound (about 767 miles or 1234 kilometers per hour at sea level) and creates a sonic boom or shock waves. The term originated from the difficulties experienced and noticeable increase in drag faced by aircraft as they approached this speed. Despite the name, the sound barrier is not a physical barrier but a point at which aerodynamic problems can occur.

Sound barrier
The sound barrier, in aerodynamics, is the point at which an object moves from transonic to supersonic speed. The term, which occasionally has other meanings, came into use during World War II, when a number of aircraft started to encounter the effects of compressibility, a collection of several unrelated aerodynamic effects that "struck" their aircraft like an impediment to further acceleration. By the 1950s, new aircraft designs routinely "broke" the sound barrier. At 20 degrees Celsius the speed of sound is 343.2 meters per second which is about 768 miles per hour.

Frankly, there are a lot more sightings than have been made public, we are talking about objects that have been seen by Navy or Air Force pilots, or have been picked up by satellite imagery, that frankly engage in actions that are difficult to explain, movements that are hard to replicate, that we don't have the technology for or are traveling at speeds that exceed the sound barrier without a sonic boom.
