Wikidata
Shewanella
Shewanella is the sole genus included in the Shewanellaceae family of marine bacteria. Shewanella bacteria are capable of modifying metals to an altered state by saturating them with electrons, causing the metal to expand and soften and thereby allowing it to be processed by the bacteria. This processing releases an electrical charge. After processing, the metal has substantially reduced environmental toxicity.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Shewanella
A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic rods. It is a saprophytic, marine organism which is often isolated from spoiling fish.
