polyoma virus
Polyoma virus refers to a group of small, double-stranded DNA viruses that belong to the Polyomaviridae family. These viruses are known to infect birds and mammals, causing various diseases. Some types can infect humans as well, potentially leading to severe conditions such as progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, Merkel cell carcinoma, or organ transplant complications. They are named "polyoma" due to their ability to produce multiple (poly-) types of tumors (-oma) in some circumstances.
