papilloma
A papilloma is a benign, non-cancerous tumor that grows from epithelial tissue and forms a small, wart-like growth or bump. It can occur in various parts of the body, including the skin, the lining of the mouth and throat, the cervix, and other mucous membranes. Its appearance can vary depending on its location in the body. While generally harmless, some types of papilloma viruses are associated with certain types of cancer.
Webster Dictionary
Papillomanoun
a tumor formed by hypertrophy of the papillae of the skin or mucous membrane, as a corn or a wart
Etymology: [NL. See Papilla, and -Oma.]
Wikidata
Papilloma
Papilloma refers to a benign epithelial tumor growing exophytically in finger-like fronds. In this context papilla refers to the projection created by the tumor, not a tumor on an already existing papilla. When used without context, it frequently refers to infections caused by human papillomavirus, such as warts. There are, however, a number of other conditions that cause papilloma, as well as many cases in which there is no known cause. Human papillomavirus infection is a major cause of cervical cancer, although most HPV infections do not cause cancer.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Papilloma
A circumscribed benign epithelial tumor projecting from the surrounding surface; more precisely, a benign epithelial neoplasm consisting of villous or arborescent outgrowths of fibrovascular stroma covered by neoplastic cells. (Stedman, 25th ed)
