    Panicker was a title conferred by the king of Travancore to distinguished individuals. People with this surname belong to both Nair and Ezhava communities in Kerala but some of them also belong to the christian community. Kiriyathil/Illathu Nair panickers should not be confused with Kalari Panicker They were well known as the masters of Kalari tradition, having their Nalpatheeradi Kalari (name derived from its area of 42 x 21 feet). They are the people who propagated and practised Kalaripayattu, the martial art form of Kerala.Some of them were Kalari masters while the others trained and recruited men for the King or chief's army.
