Wikipedia

  1. Nitpicking

Nitpicking is a term, first used in 1956, that describes the action of giving too much attention to unimportant detail. A person who nitpicks is termed as a nitpicker. The terminology originates from the common act of manually removing nits (the eggs of lice, generally head lice) from another person's hair.As nitpicking inherently requires fastidious attention to detail, the term has become appropriated to describe the practice of meticulously searching for minor, even trivial errors in detail.Nitpicking has been used to describe dishonest insurers and bullying employers, or even bullying family members.

Wikidata

  1. Nitpicking

Nitpicking is the act of removing nits from the host's hair. As the nits are cemented to individual hairs, they cannot be removed with most lice combs and, before modern chemical methods were invented, the only options were to shave all the host's hair or to pick them free one by one. This is a slow and laborious process, as the root of each individual hair must be examined for infestation. It was largely abandoned as modern chemical methods became available; however, as lice populations can and do develop resistance, manual nitpicking is still often necessary. As nitpicking inherently requires fastidious, meticulous attention to detail, the term has become appropriated to describe the practice of meticulously searching for minor, even trivial errors in detail, and then criticising them. Nitpicking is also the act of being overly concerned about insignificant details.

Examples of nitpicking in a Sentence

  1. Thom Tillis:

Those are people nitpicking on smaller subjects that people are going to be looking at in totality, it's no different than when you criticize a governor for saying( a storm) is going to make landfall here, but it was 100 miles up the road. ... As the President, you're trying to give people optimism, because that alone can help improve the situation. But we're learning a lot. We're revising things, and I don't criticize him or our governor for making changes in their estimates and their predictions.
