Nirvana
Nirvāṇa is an ancient Sanskrit term used in Indian religions to describe the profound peace of mind that is acquired with moksha. In shramanic thought, it is the state of being free from suffering. In Hindu philosophy, it is union with the Brahman. The word literally means "blown out" and refers, in the Buddhist context, to the imperturbable stillness of mind after the fires of desire, aversion, and delusion have been finally extinguished.
Chambers 20th Century Dictionary
Nirvana
nir-vä′na, n. the cessation of individual existence—the state to which a Buddhist aspires as the best attainable. [Sans., 'a blowing out.']
The Nuttall Encyclopedia
Nirvâna
the name given to the consummation of bliss in the Hindu, but especially the Buddhist, religions, synonymous with extinction, which in the Hindu creed means the extinction of individuality by absorption in the Divine Being, and in Buddhism, not, as some presume, the extinction of existence, but the extinction of agitation of mind through the crucifixion of all passion and desire, the attainment of self-centred, self-sufficient quiescence of being, or rest and peace of soul.
