Definitions for mounted infantry
Infantry which is transported on mounts (e.g. horses) but fights on foot.
Mounted infantry were soldiers who rode horses instead of marching, but fought on foot. The original dragoons were essentially mounted infantry. According to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, "Mounted rifles are half cavalry, mounted infantry merely specially mobile infantry."
