  1. monazitenoun

any of a range of reddish-brown minerals that are mixed phosphates of the lighter rare earth elements lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and yttrium

Wikipedia

  1. Monazite

Monazite is a primarily reddish-brown phosphate mineral that contains rare-earth elements. Due to variability in composition, monazite is considered a group of minerals. The most common species of the group is monazite-(Ce), that is, the cerium-dominant member of the group. It occurs usually in small isolated crystals. It has a hardness of 5.0 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and is relatively dense, about 4.6 to 5.7 g/cm3. There are five different most common species of monazite, depending on the relative amounts of the rare earth elements in the mineral: monazite-(Ce), (Ce,La,Nd,Th)PO4 (the most common member), monazite-(La), (La,Ce,Nd)PO4, monazite-(Nd), (Nd,La,Ce)PO4, monazite-(Sm), (Sm,Gd,Ce,Th)PO4, monazite-(Pr), (Pr,Ce,Nd,Th)PO4.The elements in parentheses are listed in the order of their relative proportion within the mineral: lanthanum is the most common rare-earth element in monazite-(La), and so forth. Silica (SiO2) is present in trace amounts, as well as small amounts of uranium and thorium. Due to the alpha decay of thorium and uranium, monazite contains a significant amount of helium, which can be extracted by heating. The following analyses are of monazite from: (I.) Burke County, North Carolina, USA; (II.) Arendal, Norway; (III.) Emmaville, New South Wales, Australia. Monazite is an important ore for thorium, lanthanum, and cerium. It is often found in placer deposits. India, Madagascar, and South Africa have large deposits of monazite sands. The deposits in India are particularly rich in monazite. Monazite is radioactive due to the presence of thorium and, less commonly, uranium. The radiogenic decay of uranium and thorium to lead enables monazite to be dated through monazite geochronology. Monazite crystals often have multiple distinct zones that formed through successive geologic events that lead to monazite crystallization. These domains can be dated to gain insight into the geologic history of its host rocks. The name monazite comes from the Ancient Greek: μονάζειν, romanized: monázein (to be solitary), via German Monazit, in allusion to its isolated crystals.

  1. monazite

Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral that contains rare earth metals. It is often found in small amounts in igneous rocks, or in concentrated deposits in sedimentary ones. It is used as a source of thorium, and various other rare-earth elements. It is notable for its radioactive properties.

Webster Dictionary

  1. Monazitenoun

a mineral occurring usually in small isolated crystals, -- a phosphate of the cerium metals

  2. Etymology: [From Gr. mona`zein to be solitary, in allusion to its isolated crystals.]

  1. Monazite

Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral containing rare earth metals. It occurs usually in small isolated crystals. There are actually at least four different kinds of monazite, depending on relative elemental composition of the mineral: ⁕monazite-Ce PO4 ⁕monazite-La PO4 ⁕monazite-Nd PO4 ⁕monazite-Sm PO4 The elements in parentheses are listed in the order in which they are in relative proportion within the mineral, so that lanthanum is the most common rare earth in monazite-La, and so forth. Silica, SiO2, will be present in trace amounts, as well as small amounts of uranium and thorium. Due to the alpha decay of thorium and uranium, monazite contains a significant amount of helium, which can be extracted by heating. Monazite is an important ore for thorium, lanthanum, and cerium. It is often found in placer deposits. The deposits in India are particularly rich in monazite. It has a hardness of 5.0 to 5.5 and is relatively dense, about 4.6 to 5.7 g/cm³. Because of the presence of thorium within monazite, it can be radioactive. If samples are kept, they should be placed away from minerals that can be damaged by radiation. Because of its radioactive nature, the monazite within rocks is a useful tool for dating geological events, such as heating or deformation of the rock.
