  1. Master race

The master race (German: Herrenrasse) is a pseudoscientific concept in Nazi ideology in which the putative "Aryan race" is deemed the pinnacle of human racial hierarchy. Members were referred to as "Herrenmenschen" ("master humans").The Nazi theorist Alfred Rosenberg believed that the "Nordic race" was descended from "Proto-Aryans", who he believed had pre-historically dwelt on the North German Plain and may have ultimately originated on the lost continent of Atlantis. The Nazis declared that the Aryans were superior to all other races, and believed they were entitled to expand territorially. The actual policy that was implemented by the Nazis resulted in the Aryan certificate. This document, which was required by law for all citizens of the Reich, was the "Lesser Aryan certificate" (Kleiner Ariernachweis) and could be obtained through an Ahnenpass, which required the owner to trace their lineage through baptism, birth certificates, or certified proof thereof that all grandparents were of "Aryan descent". The Slavs, Gypsies, and Jews were defined as being racially inferior and non-Aryan "Untermenschen", and were thus considered to be a danger to the Aryan or Germanic master race. According to the Nazi secret Hunger Plan and Generalplan Ost, the Slavic population was to be removed from Central Europe through expulsion, enslavement, starvation, and extermination, except for a small percentage who were deemed to be non-Slavic descendants of Germanic settlers, and thus suitable for Germanisation.

  1. master race

The term "master race" is a concept in Nazi ideology in which the Nordic or Aryan race, a supposed pure white, superior and dominant race, was considered the highest in the racial hierarchy. The idea is rooted in racism, ethnocentrism, and white supremacy, all of which advocate for racial purity and discrimination. This term and concept is highly controversial and offensive due to its association with racial superiority theories that have been widely discredited and condemned. It is important to note that these ideologies resulted in the genocide and oppression of millions of people during the Holocaust.

  1. Master race

The Master race is a concept in Nazi ideology in which the Nordic race - a branch of what in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century taxonomy was called the Aryan race - represented an ideal and pure race. In Nazi ideology the Nordic race was the purest example of the original racial stock of those who were then called the Proto-Aryans, whom the Nazis believed to have prehistorically dwelt on the North German Plain and to have ultimately originated from the lost continent of Atlantis. The Nazis declared that the Nordics, were the true Aryans because they were less racially mixed with "non-native" Indo-European peoples than other people of what were then called the Aryan peoples, such as the Slavic peoples, the Romance peoples and the Indo-Iranian peoples. Based on this claim that the Nordic peoples were superior to all other races, the Nazis believed they were entitled to expand territorially. This concept is known as Nordicism. The actual policy that was implemented by the Nazis resulted in the Aryan certificate. The Nazis maintained that in Slavic countries, there were groups of people that had Nordic traits such as light hair and light eye color were thus seen to be racially fit to be a part of the master race. The Nazis in accordance to this considered some citizens in these countries to be sufficient subjects for Germanisation in order to be considered Aryan while Slavic population according to the Nazi Generalplan Ost was to be removed through expulsion and murder from East-Central Europe. Nazis eventually decided to exterminate the Poles and most of the other Slavic people who, along with the Jews and Gypsies, were defined as untermenschen, and a danger to the Aryan race.

  3. Jonathan Greenblatt:

Well, Whoopi, there’s no question that the Holocaust was about race. That’s how the Nazis saw it as they perpetrated the systematic annihilation of the Jewish people across continents, across countries with deliberate and ruthless cruelty, you see, Hitler’s ideology, the Third Reich, was predicated on the idea that the Aryans, the Germans, were a ‘master race,’ and the Jews were a subhuman race. It was racialized anti-Semitism.

  4. Jonathan Greenblatt:

Hitler's ideology, the Third Reich, was predicated on the idea that the Aryans, the Germans, were a master race and the Jews were a subhuman race. It was a racialized anti-Semitism, now that might not fit exactly or feel different than the way we think about race in 21st century America, where primarily it's about people of color, but throughout the Jewish people's history, they have been marginalized, they have been persecuted, they have been slaughtered, in large part because many people felt they were not just a different religion, but indeed a different race.
