Wikidata

  1. Mainland China

Mainland China has two definitions. One is the Chinese mainland or simply the mainland, a geographic and political term to describe the geopolitical area under the jurisdiction of the People's Republic of China. The second is the area South from the Great Wall and North from the Yellow River, which is called the "HeavenLand" or "天子" It generally excludes the PRC Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau. Also when used as the second definition excludes also "Manchuria", "Tibet", "Uighur", "Inner-Mongolia" and even south from the Yellow River when describing the HeavenLand according to Sino-Centrism. The second definition is the origin of the name "Zhongguo" or "中國" meaning it is the centre of the world according to Sinocentrism. It avoids calling the area simply "China" and thereby recognizing the founding of People's Republic of China as the "China" and was coined by the Kuomintang after it took control of Taiwan, particularly after 1949, when the KMT-led Republic of China government was defeated in the Chinese Civil War on the mainland and fled to Taiwan, and pledged to "retake the Mainland". The KMT considers both sides of the Taiwan Strait, i.e. including Taiwan, as "China" and one country; whereas the Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party considers only mainland China as "China" and Taiwan as "Taiwan" and different countries.
