Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) was a German philosopher, widely considered one of the principal figures of Western philosophy. His comprehensive and systematic work in epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics greatly influenced all subsequent philosophy, especially various schools of Kantianism and idealism. His most known work is the "Critique of Pure Reason," in which he attempted to explain the relationship between reason and human experience and to move beyond the failures of traditional philosophy and metaphysics. He is also known for his moral philosophy, particularly his principle known as the "categorical imperative," which means that moral obligations are imperatives that apply unconditionally.

During the Soviet era, Kant and its surrounding area were home to a large number of ethnic Germans who had been forcibly relocated to Central Asia in 1941 from the Volga region when the Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was abolished. Most left for Germany during the 1990s and after the demise of the Soviet Union when the factories where they had worked shut down. Several other nearby settlements, such as Luxemburg and Bergtal, still carry their German names, but retain only very small remnants of their Volga German and Russian Mennonite founders.
