an evergreen tree, Yucca brevifolia, with long, twisted branches, growing in arid regions of the southwestern U.S.
Joshua tree, Yucca brevifolia(noun)
a large branched arborescent yucca of southwestern United States having short leaves and clustered greenish white flowers
A yucca, Yucca brevifolia, of the southwestern U.S. with spiky leaves.
Origin: Apparently from the resemblance of the tree to Joshua holding out his spear (Joshua 8:18: ‘And the LORD said unto Joshua, stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.’ KJV).
Yucca brevifolia is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names: Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca. This monocotyledonous tree is native to southwestern North America in the states of California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, where it is confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400 and 1,800 m elevation. It thrives in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. A dense Joshua tree forest also exists in Mojave National Preserve, in the area of Cima Dome. In addition to the autonymic subspecies Yucca brevifolia subsp. brevifolia, two other subspecies have been described: Yucca brevifolia subsp. jaegeriana and Yucca brevifolia subsp. herbertii, though both are sometimes treated as varieties or forms.
