Wikipedia

  1. Guernsey

Guernsey ( (listen); Guernésiais: Guernési; French: Guernesey) is an island in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy that is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency. It is the second largest of the Channel Islands, an island group roughly north of Saint-Malo and west of the Cotentin Peninsula. The jurisdiction consists of ten parishes on the island of Guernsey, three other inhabited islands (Herm, Jethou and Lihou), and many small islets and rocks. It is not part of the United Kingdom, although defence and some aspects of international relations are managed by the UK. Although the bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are often referred to collectively as the Channel Islands, the "Channel Islands" are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate relationship to the Crown from the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey and the Isle of Man, although all are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom. The island has a mixed British-Norman culture, although British cultural influence is stronger, with English being the main language and the pound sterling its primary currency. The island has a traditional local language known as Guernésiais.

  1. guernsey

A guernsey is a type of knitted sweater that originated from Guernsey, an island in the English Channel. Traditionally, these sweaters were worn by fishermen as the tight knit protected them from cold, sea spray and wind. In a broader context, Guernsey is also an island in the English Channel near the French coast, and a British Crown dependency. Additionally, "Guernsey" refers to a breed of dairy cattle that originated from this island, known for their rich, high-quality milk.

Wikidata

  1. Guernsey

Guernsey, officially the Bailiwick of Guernsey, is a British Crown dependency in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy. As a bailiwick, Guernsey embraces not only all ten parishes on the Island of Guernsey, but also the islands of Alderney and Sark – each with their own parliament – and the smaller islands of Herm, Jethou and Lihou. Although its defence is the responsibility of the United Kingdom, the Bailiwick is not part of the United Kingdom, but, as its description suggests, a possession of the British Crown. Consequently, though it lies within the Common Travel Area of the European Union, it is not part of the European Union. Together, the Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey form the geographical grouping known as the Channel Islands.
