Gram's method, Gram method, Gram's procedure, Gram's stain, Gram stainnoun
a staining technique used to classify bacteria; bacteria are stained with gentian violet and then treated with Gram's solution; after being decolorized with alcohol and treated with safranine and washed in water, those that retain the gentian violet are Gram-positive and those that do not retain it are Gram-negative

gram's method
In microbiology and bacteriology, Gram stain (Gram staining or Gram's method), is a method of staining used to classify bacterial species into two large groups: gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria. The name comes from the Danish bacteriologist Hans Christian Gram, who developed the technique in 1884.Gram staining differentiates bacteria by the chemical and physical properties of their cell walls. Gram-positive cells have a thick layer of peptidoglycan in the cell wall that retains the primary stain, crystal violet. Gram-negative cells have a thinner peptidoglycan layer that allows the crystal violet to wash out on addition of ethanol. They are stained pink or red by the counterstain, commonly safranin or fuchsine. Lugol's iodine solution is always added after addition of crystal violet to strengthen the bonds of the stain with the cell membrane. Gram staining is almost always the first step in the preliminary identification of a bacterial organism. While Gram staining is a valuable diagnostic tool in both clinical and research settings, not all bacteria can be definitively classified by this technique. This gives rise to Gram-variable and Gram-indeterminate groups.

gram's method
Gram's Method, also called the Gram-Schmidt process, is a method used primarily in numerical linear algebra for orthonormalizing a set of vectors in an inner product space, most commonly the Euclidean space. This method is named after Jørgen Pedersen Gram and Erhard Schmidt. The procedure involves taking a finite, linearly independent set S = {v₁, ..., vₙ} for the vector space V over the field F and generating an orthogonal set S' = {u₁, ..., uₙ} that spans the same n-dimensional subspace of V as S. This new set S' can then be normalized to produce an orthonormal set if desired.
