glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis is a type of kidney disease characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli, which are tiny structures in your kidneys that are responsible for filtering waste, excess water, and electrolytes from the bloodstream to create urine. This inflammation can affect the kidneys' ability to filter waste and fluids, leading to conditions like kidney damage or kidney failure if not properly managed. Glomerulonephritis can occur rapidly (acute) or gradually over time (chronic).
Wikidata
Glomerulonephritis
Glomerulonephritis, also known as glomerular nephritis, abbreviated GN, is a renal disease characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli, or small blood vessels in the kidneys. It may present with isolated hematuria and/or proteinuria; or as a nephrotic syndrome, a nephritic syndrome, acute renal failure, or chronic renal failure. They are categorized into several different pathological patterns, which are broadly grouped into non-proliferative or proliferative types. Diagnosing the pattern of GN is important because the outcome and treatment differs in different types. Primary causes are intrinsic to the kidney. Secondary causes are associated with certain infections, drugs, systemic disorders, or diabetes.
