Wikipedia
Free throw
In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points by shooting from behind the free-throw line (informally known as the foul line or the charity stripe), a line situated at the end of the restricted area. Free throws are generally awarded after a foul on the shooter by the opposing team, analogous to penalty shots in other team sports. Free throws are also awarded in other situations, including technical fouls, and when the fouling team has entered the bonus/penalty situation (after a team commits a requisite number of fouls, each subsequent foul results in free throws regardless of the type of foul committed). Also, depending on the situation, a player may be awarded between one and three free throws. Each successful free throw is worth one point.

Examples of free throw in a Sentence
You're problem-solving when things are easy, it's the equivalent of practicing a free throw during practice versus only waiting to practice a free throw when the game is on the line.
You can point to a couple of things. You can point to turnovers. We had 25, then the free-throw line. You can’t go 5 for 13 from the foul line. Those kinds of things just take the air from you.
Have pride, keep your man in front of you, don’t allow them to have easy looks, don’t allow them to get easily to the free throw line. Rebound the ball. Make sure when we miss or make shots, you got to box (out). The little things add up in 48 minutes and then you’ll have the result of being good on defense. But if you let the guy shoot an open 3 then let somebody go backdoor, let somebody get offensive rebound then throw it to the 3-point guy so he can knock down the 3, all that builds up and you have a bad night.
Washington Wizards guard Isaiah Thomas:
When I missed the first free throw, and made the second, I'm running back, the fan had both of his middle fingers up and said,' fuck you, bitch' three times, so then the timeout goes, and I go in the stands and confront him. I said,' don't be disrespectful'.
Last game he was living in the paint, had a lot of floaters (and) those are pretty much layups for him, we didn’t really want that to get him started early. And I don’t think he went to the free throw line much tonight, which is also pretty big for us.
