entrepot
An entrepot is a port, city, or trading post where goods can be imported, stored, and traded, often exempt from customs duties. This is usually done for re-exportation to other destinations, rather than for domestic consumption. It serves as a center for the transshipment of goods or a distribution point for commodities.
Webster Dictionary
Entrepotnoun
a warehouse; a magazine for depositing goods, stores, etc.; a mart or place where merchandise is deposited; as, an entrepot for shipping goods in transit
Wikidata
Entrepôt
An entrepôt is a trading post where merchandise can be imported and exported without paying import duties, often at a profit. To illustrate, the reluctance of ships to travel the entire length of a long trading route made them more willing to sell to an entrepôt instead. The entrepôt then sells the goods at a higher price to ships travelling the other segment of the route. In modern times customs areas have largely made such entrepôts obsolete. This type of port should not be confused with the modern French usage of the word entrepôt meaning warehouse.
Chambers 20th Century Dictionary
Entrepôt
äng′tr'pō, n. a storehouse: a bonded warehouse: a seaport through which exports and imports pass. [Fr.]
