Emollitionnoun
The act of softening.
Etymology: emollitio, Latin.
Lassitude is remedied by bathing, or anointing with oil and warm water: the cause is, for that all lassitude is a kind of contusion and compression of the parts, and bathing and anointing give a relaxation or emollition. Francis Bacon.
Powerful menstruums are made for its emollition, whereby it may receive the tincture of minerals. Thomas Browne, Vulgar Err.
