ChatGPT

  1. dracunculus medinensis

Dracunculus medinensis, commonly known as the Guinea worm, is a parasitic worm that causes the disease known as dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease). The worm is long, thin and thread-like, and an infection typically occurs when people drink water that contains water fleas infected with guinea worm larvae. Once inside the body, the worms mate and female worms grow, sometimes reaching lengths of two to three feet. Over the course of a year, the worm creates a blister in the skin, which bursts and releases larvae, thus repeating the cycle. The Guinea worm is one of the few parasites that infects humans but cannot be transmitted directly from one person to another. Dracunculiasis has been targeted for eradication and incidences of the disease have significantly decreased due to public health efforts such as providing access to clean water and education about the disease.
