distillation
Distillation is a chemical process used for separating mixtures based on differences in the conditions required to change the phase of components of the mixture. It is a technique that involves two related procedures, evaporation and condensation, to separate substances in a solution based on their different boiling points. The liquid with the lower boiling point vaporizes first and is then condensed back into a liquid in a separate container.

Distillation
Distillation is a method of separating mixtures based on differences in volatility of components in a boiling liquid mixture. Distillation is a unit operation, or a physical separation process, and not a chemical reaction. Commercially, distillation has a number of applications. It is used to separate crude oil into more fractions for specific uses such as transport, power generation and heating. Water is distilled to remove impurities, such as salt from seawater. Air is distilled to separate its components—notably oxygen, nitrogen, and argon— for industrial use. Distillation of fermented solutions has been used since ancient times to produce distilled beverages with a higher alcohol content. The premises where distillation is carried out, especially distillation of alcohol, are known as a distillery. A still is the apparatus used for distillation.
U.S. National Library of Medicine
Distillation
A chemical process for separating the components of a liquid mixture by boiling and collecting condensed vapors.
The Standard Electrical Dictionary
Distillation
The evaporation of a liquid by heat, and sometimes in a vacuum, followed by condensation of the vapors, which distil or drop from the end of the condenser. It is claimed that the process is accelerated by the liquid being electrified.
