    Dame Nellie Melba was an Australian soprano opera singer, one of the most famous in the early 20th century. Born as Helen Porter Mitchell in Richmond, Victoria, in 1861, she adopted the pseudonym "Melba" from her home city of Melbourne. She made her operatic debut in Brussels in 1887 and later gained international recognition, performing at some of the most prestigious opera houses around the world. She was the first Australian to achieve international recognition as a classical musician. Melba was also the first singer to appear on a radio broadcast, on 15 June 1920. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1918. Dame Nellie Melba died in 1931.
