cryptomonad
A cryptomonad is a type of single-celled organism, or protozoan, typically found in fresh or salty water. They are characterized by their two flagella - long whip-like structures used for movement - and the presence of a cryptobiotic or 'hidden' feeding organelle. Some cryptomonads contain special pigments that carry out photosynthesis, making them an important part of the aquatic food chain.
