Wikipedia

  1. cross-examine

In law, cross-examination is the interrogation of a witness called by one's opponent. It is preceded by direct examination (in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, South Africa, India and Pakistan known as examination-in-chief) and may be followed by a redirect (re-examination in Ireland, England, Scotland, Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, Hong Kong, and Pakistan). Redirect examination, performed by the attorney or pro se individual who performed the direct examination, clarifies the witness' testimony provided during cross-examination including any subject matter raised during cross-examination but not discussed during direct examination. Recross examination addresses the witness' testimony discussed in redirect by the opponent. Depending on the judge's discretion, opponents are allowed multiple opportunities to redirect and recross examine witnesses (may vary by jurisdiction).

Examples of cross-examine in a Sentence

  1. Jim Jordan:

Written answers will not provide a sufficient opportunity to probe all the relevant facts and cross examine The Whistleblower. You don't get to ignite an impeachment effort and never account for your actions and role in orchestrating it, we have serious questions about this individual's political bias and partisan motivations and it seems Mark Zaid and Adam Schiff are attempting to hide these facts from public scrutiny. Last week's testimony raised even more concerns about the anonymous whistleblower and our need to hear from Mark Zaid and Adam Schiff, in person.

  2. Trey Gowdy:

It’s really hard to cross-examine tweets.

  3. The Wisconsin Republican:

It's impossible to bring this case forward in my view fairly without us knowing who the whistleblower is and having a chance to cross examine them about any biases they may have.

  4. Judge Statom:

He raised his finger up and opened his mouth to speak and I had already decided he was not taking control over my courtroom, i had already told him if he decided to speak I would let the prosecutor cross examine him.

  5. Abe George:

There was an attorney for Club Med, strangely enough, that the court declared an interested party who got to cross-examine witnesses. And there was an attorney for the police department there who also cross-examined witnesses. And the attorney for the police department and the attorney for the club led essentially the same team, cross-examining the medical examiner, trying to cast doubt about his determination of manual strangulation, it was incredible. It was one of the craziest things I've seen.
