  1. computed tomographynoun

A form of radiography which uses computer software to create images, or slices, at various planes of depth from images taken around a body or volume of interest.

Wikipedia

  1. computed tomography

A computed tomography scan (usually abbreviated to CT scan; formerly called computed axial tomography scan or CAT scan) is a medical imaging technique used to obtain detailed internal images of the body. The personnel that perform CT scans are called radiographers or radiology technologists.CT scanners use a rotating X-ray tube and a row of detectors placed in a gantry to measure X-ray attenuations by different tissues inside the body. The multiple X-ray measurements taken from different angles are then processed on a computer using tomographic reconstruction algorithms to produce tomographic (cross-sectional) images (virtual "slices") of a body. CT scan can be used in patients with metallic implants or pacemakers, for whom magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is contraindicated. Since its development in the 1970s, CT scanning has proven to be a versatile imaging technique. While CT is most prominently used in medical diagnosis, it can also be used to form images of non-living objects. The 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to South African-American physicist Allan MacLeod Cormack and British electrical engineer Godfrey Hounsfield "for the development of computer-assisted tomography".

  1. computed tomography

Computed Tomography, commonly known as CT scan, is a medical imaging technique that uses computer-processed combinations of many X-ray measurements taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional (tomographic) images of specific areas of the body. This allows for detailed viewing and analysis of both internal structures and tissues. This imaging method is often used to aid in the diagnoses, monitoring, and treatment of various health conditions.

  1. Computed tomography

X-ray computed tomography, also computed tomography, computed axial tomography or computer assisted tomography is a medical imaging procedure that uses computer-processed X-rays to produce tomographic images or 'slices' of specific areas of the body. These cross-sectional images are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various medical disciplines. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. CT produces a volume of data that can be manipulated, through a process known as "windowing", in order to demonstrate various bodily structures based on their ability to block the X-ray beam. Although historically the images generated were in the axial or transverse plane, perpendicular to the long axis of the body, modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric representations of structures. Although most common in medicine, CT is also used in other fields, such as nondestructive materials testing. Another example is archaeological uses such as imaging the contents of sarcophagi. Individuals responsible for performing CT exams are called Radiologic Technologists or Radiographers and are required to be licensed in most states.

Examples of computed tomography in a Sentence

  1. Sanjay Gupta:

I don't want to suggest that everyone who hits their head needs to go get a [ computed tomography also known as a CT or CAT) ] scan, most do not need that obviously. But if it's a significant blow, you're on blood thinners... and again those symptoms : worsening headaches, confusion, nausea, vomiting, slurring of speech, things like that are unusual. You should definitely go get that checked out.
