complementary dna
Complementary DNA (cDNA) is a form of DNA synthesized from a messenger RNA (mRNA) template through a process called reverse transcription. This process is catalyzed by the enzyme reverse transcriptase. Complementary DNA is often used in gene cloning or as gene probes. It is called "complementary" because its DNA sequence is a complement to the mRNA molecule from which it was derived, matching up bases to form a double-stranded DNA molecule.
Wikidata
Complementary DNA
In genetics, complementary DNA is DNA synthesized from a messenger RNA template in a reaction catalysed by the enzymes reverse transcriptase and DNA polymerase. cDNA is often used to clone eukaryotic genes in prokaryotes. When scientists want to express a specific protein in a cell that does not normally express that protein, they will transfer the cDNA that codes for the protein to the recipient cell. cDNA is also produced naturally by retroviruses and then integrated into the host's genome where it creates a provirus.
