    Two great circles supposed to pass through the poles of the world: one through the equinoctial points Aries and Libra; the other through the solstitial points, Cancer and Capricorn. They are called the equinoctial and solstitial colures, and divide the ecliptick into four equal parts. The points where they intersect the ecliptick are called the cardinal points. John Harris
